Mitigating climate change is a goal shared throughout Onninen’s value chain, which comprises product manufacturers, Onninen as the importer and seller of the products, and customers who use the products. In addition to cutting emissions from its own operations, Onninen is encouraging its suppliers and customers to do the same.
”For years now, we have challenged our customers to set themselves targets for cutting emissions. In turn, our customers have asked us to help them track the carbon footprint of the products we provide,” says Timo Nikulainen, the Director in charge of Onninen’s infrastructure business.
The majority of Onninen’s emissions come from the primary production, manufacture, packaging, transport and use of the products it sells.
“Onninen delivers some 12 million sales lines to customers every year. The Hyvinkää logistics centre alone sends out 600,000 deliveries annually. Although transports only account for a small portion of a product’s total emissions, it is an area where we can have a tangible impact by making choices between fossil and renewable fuels and recyclable transport packaging”, says Nikulainen.
Onninen’s customers in Finland can access the logistics carbon footprint report via the Onninen online store. The first reports were made available in May 2023.
“Our customers have welcomed the carbon footprint report. They need to obtain more information on transport emissions so that they can report on their own emissions and develop their operations,” explains Nikulainen.
Onninen is part of K Group, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. K Group will be systematically reducing its emissions, offsetting remaining emissions between 2025 and 2030, and finally striving for zero emissions from own operations and transports by 2030.
